Undivided

Undivided is a website template I designed for activism and community engagement. Engineered with organizing in mind, Undivided helps leaders share information, plan events, and connect with like-minded folks. Undivided includes easy-to-use calendar functions, discussion forums, and a feed that’s readily sharable across social media platforms. The straightforward design of Undivided allows leaders to quickly update information for real-time sharing.

I designed Undivided as a dynamic and purpose-driven web theme to empower grassroots movements, social justice organizations, and community-focused initiatives. It combines clean design with user-friendly features to help mobilize supporters, share important messages, and amplify organizational impact.

Undivided features a modern design aesthetic and adapts seamlessly across devices. Users can be sure their message will be effectively communicated with their audience, whether they’re on a desktop, tablet, or phone.

Additionally, this theme is designed to be lightweight and can be swiftly optimized for search engines and quick loading times. Undivided is a nimble tool for community leaders to reach people and keep them engaged.

On Process

Originally titled “Nimble,” I executed my initial development of the interface for Undivided by sketching on pen and paper. The adjacent gif shows my first 50 layout concepts. This is my standard process for any design work—start with analog materials and exhaust ideas through writing and sketching. I nearly always begin with a word list, followed immediately by drafting quick iterations of ideas by hand.

After I’ve developed several effective conceptual directions on paper, I move into the digital sphere to create pixel-perfect designs. By starting with words and generating multiple paths toward a design solution, I am not only ensuring that my work communicates successfully, I am conceptually grounding the work to facilitate its presentation and (if necessary) defense.

After writing and sketching to create a well-grounded conceptual and visual framework for the web theme, I moved into digitally designing the interface.

Undivided has features aimed at creating an information and resource hub, as well as functioning as a digital megaphone.

The calendar provides a means for short- and long-term planning, and a nucleus for event communication. The discussion forums create a space for brainstorming and sharing ideas. The blog is an area for regular updates, news, and sharing thought leadership on important issues.

The shareable feed function of Undivided gives users a way to quickly promote events, ideas, and actions to their own social media networks—amplifying the information.

For fast-moving campaigns or urgent calls-to-action, the feed can be updated in real-time. This allows activists to always have the freshest content at their fingertips, and facilitates wide sharing of messaging.

The shareable feed can be set up to crowd source content. In this way, individual folks can further build a sense of ownership and empowerment around a cause.
